Play a classic

Open Play a classic on Home, or Library → Songbook. Choose one of 20 familiar traditional songs and classical themes. Melody plays the tune; Chords plays an original accompaniment over the same timeline. It does not play the melody at the same time. Both versions show standard notation, optional tab, and the sounding notes on the fretboard.

For Chords, strum the highlighted strings once at each new measure and let them ring. Skip unmarked strings. Finger 0 means an open string; the small F shape uses the index finger across strings 1 and 2. The arrows beside the chord name step between measures. Every sounding chord tone stays highlighted for its duration. Historical versions can differ from familiar modern versions; About this tune identifies the source and any named theme.

Melody and Chords each remember their own position and practice settings. Switching pauses playback. The entire Songbook is bundled for offline use. Instrument changes recompute positions and transpose chord names; if a configuration is unplayable, Restore original configuration returns to the authored tuning, capo, and transposition.

Start an exercise

Open Learn → Free Practice and choose one of 18 original single-note guitar exercises. Standard notation and tablature appear in Play. The fretboard shows the current note's string and fret, with the next position indicated separately. String 1 is the high E string; string 6 is the low E string. Fret 0 means play the open string.

The included music uses standard tuning, E–A–D–G–B–E from lowest to highest string. Guitar notation is written one octave above its sounding pitch. The fretboard and audio use the sounding pitch.

Tutorial Mode

Open Learn → Tutorial Mode, or Continue Tutorial on Home. Every lesson is accessible. Follow See it, Hear it, Try it, and Recap at your own pace. Completion records participation, not a test of mastery. Your last lesson, step, example, tempo, and position are saved on this device.

The teaching fretboard starts at frets 0–5 and extends to fret 8 for later lessons. Marker numbers indicate fretting fingers; fret numbers appear below the board. A hollow circle means an open string, and an X means do not play that string. Tap an included position to hear its note during the explanation. During Try it, tapping answers the Find this note question. The fret choices below the question provide an accessible alternative.

Show tab adds tablature below standard notation. Left-handed reverses the fretboard orientation without changing string numbers or pitches. Previous and Next move one musical step; Hear this step auditions a note or chord. Tutorial Mode uses standard tuning with no capo. Changing lessons leaves your Free Practice song and settings intact. The public guided course does not listen to your microphone or grade your playing.

Playback and practice

Tap Play to start, then Pause to hold your place. Tap Restart to clear any loop and return to the beginning. Drag Playback position to seek. Open Practice to change BPM, choose a speed preset, navigate measures, loop a passage, or enable count-in and metronome. Tempo changes keep pitch intact. The BPM range is one quarter to twice the exercise's original tempo.

An exercise is saved locally when you first open it. Opening it again restores its saved practice settings. Your library stays available offline. You can remove your saved copy from Library → My Library and start fresh from Learn → Free Practice.

Fretboard and instrument

The highlighted marker and the note/string/fret readout show where to play the current note. A rest has no sounding position. Tap the fretboard to choose another valid fingering, or expand it for a larger view. Instrument settings include tuning, capo and transposition; changing them may make a passage unplayable, in which case StringMap explains the problem. Restore standard tuning, no capo, and zero transposition to use the original exercise.

Scope of this release

StringMap includes 24 tutorial lessons, 18 original single-note exercises, and 20 familiar classics with 40 Melody and Chords arrangements. Tutorials progress from open strings to shifting, fingerpicking, small chords, and slurs. Photo scanning, handwriting, general chord import, and public file import are not included. There is no account, purchase, or recognition service to configure.

If playback is silent

Check device volume and the selected output. After a call or disconnecting headphones, return to the app and tap Play. If notation or playback fails to load, reopen the exercise and then restart the app if needed.
